The Danube Valley “Wachau” (which will be visited on the occasion of a field trip on Sunday afternoon) represents a remarkable cultural landscape. It combines natural beauty with a vast cultural heritage. Not surprisingly it was awarded with international recognition (World Heritage, European Diploma for Protected Areas). Consequently, the valley deserves highest standards regarding monuments protection and nature-conservation. The challenges of the region caused by traffic (road, water), settlements, demographic development and tourism will be managed by inter-communal cooperation, a recently defined overall Management plan as well as by construction- and revitalisation-regulations, which will be implemented especially in the Wachau (“Wachauzonen”). The lecture is going to introduce the special features of the Wachau and the instruments for the protection of this remarkable cultural landscape.
