Verena Winiwarter , who was born and still lives in Vienna, was first trained as a chemical engineer. After years of working in atmospheric research, she earned
her M.A. in history and communication sciences in 1991, and her Ph.D. in environmental history at the University of Vienna in 1998. She has been a lecturer
(Universitätsdozent) there in Human Ecology since 2003. Since 2007, she is professor of environmental history at Alpen-Adria_Universitaet Klagenfurt. Since 2010, she serves as Dean of the Faculty for Interdisciplinary Research.
Her main research interests within environmental history comprise rivers, the micro-history of landscapes, waste, landscape images and soils. She is a founding member of the European Society for Environmental History. From 2001 until 2005 she served as its president. Besides work she enjoys walking, hiking, swimming and reading.
